The 3 D’s of Spiritual Rehab

Over the past few months I’ve found myself getting a little frustrated with clients who say they are committed to transformation and being on a spiritual path, while at the same time they make very little time for the personal processing required to make such transformations occur. It appears that our sense of the work required for personal and spiritual transformation is that it is somewhat magical & instantaneous – no mixing, stirring or messiness required. The truth, however, is that Discipline, Dedication, and Devotion are required – the 3 D’s of Spiritual Rehab. In essence, I see that the

Ah, Malaise!

I woke up this morning sad, frustrated and disappointed. “Why?” I ask myself. It’s a beautiful day on Orcas, you are healthy, you have money in the bank and a lot of good friends. The me that is sad says “Yes, I know, but….” This is pretty much a lifelong pattern for me, of waking up in a mild malaise. I’m a regular Ginger Rogers when it comes to this unhappy song and dance. I’m on to me now, though, and can trip up this unhappy La-La-La, more frequently than ever before. The truth is that for decades I’ve been

Ready for Take Off

This piece is dedicated to Emily Reed who passed away this week. We are grateful, Emily, for the gifts of your gracious presence on our dear Island. Sit Back and Relax Some people get on a plane and head out to their destination, effortlessly surrendering control to their pilots. Others are in the throes of panic – terrified of being out of control. Anxiety and fear of the unknown ride within them until they touch down at their destination. They are hyper-vigilant for that moment when the plane blows up or crashes. They await the moment of impact when powerless,

Ageism Among The Aged

Ageism Among the Aged – That’s Whacky! I know plenty of individuals in their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s who don’t want to hang around with “old people.” These old people may be the same age, yet, they are seen as different, because they are seen as old. Isn’t that fascinating. When is Old Old, and what is Old, anyway? Orcas Island Senior Lunch. The room is a sea of white-haired people, sitting around tables, apparently enjoying the company of others. Quite often a piano player is providing beautiful and joyful music. To some, this is very inviting! Depending on which

Discerning the Essence of One’s Life

Fearless Freedom Barbara Herschel was a long time Orcas Islander. She was a big hearted activist and advocated for changes that made our community more viable in so many ways. She was a real gift.Barbara hired me as her Life Coach at the age of 78. Her husband Bill passed away, and after a long time of caregiving for him, she was ready to return to those activities that made her heart soar. She wanted to paint again – something she was passionate about, yet she just couldn’t get around to it. My job was to get her on track

Getting the Job Done without Trying

This week, my friend Marj had a second knee replaced, just ten months after her first knee operation. She is coming home today just two days after the surgery. Amazing. There is no dilly-dallying these days when it comes to hospital recuperation time. They expect you to get in, get out, and back on your feet the very same day as the knee replacement. Marj went into both knee replacements with conviction and commitment that she would bring her A-Game. She exercised, changed her diet, went to Physical Therapy before and after the surgery of the first knee, and has

The Older I get the Luckier I Feel

Standing at the left cash register in the Island Hardware Store on Orcas Island, glancing into the back of the story, you will read: “If You are Lucky Enough to Live on Orcas Island, You are Lucky Enough.” It only took me 12 years of visiting Island Hardware to actually see this huge sign that is discolored with age. It had been there a long time, but somehow I missed these wise words. They have had a profound effect on me, because, up until the moment that I read those words, I took being lucky enough for granted. I saw

Aging – Who Me:

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life! If you are old enough to be reading this article you are old enough to understand that you have been participating in the aging process well before your little feet landed on the planet. You experienced the process of aging when, around the age of six, you lost your first teeth. Six years later, you began to develop muscle, breasts, pubic hair, and growth. Invisible hormones began to create sensations that were way beyond your ability to control. For many of us, we looked forward to these changes. For others, not so

Boy, Do We LOVE to HATE!

While reading A Course in Miracles, I came across the concept “the special Hate relationship.” Wow! Do you know that approximately 70-80% of any given population hate their jobs? As I googled what we hate or dislike there are a lot of very unhappy people who hate or dislike well, everything. And, I love this statistic: 70% of our thoughts are negative thoughts. That is a lot of negativity – a proportion I suspect is hateful in nature. I know I’ve done a lot of hating over my life. I was actually in DENIAL (Didn’t Even Know I Am Lying)

Creating Heaven on Earth

Given all the reading and the phenomenal conversations I’ve had with individuals who have experienced near death experiences (NDE’s), and other spiritually transformative experiences (STE’s), I have no doubt that if I died today I would be immediately embraced by loving beings on the other side. I would experience uncompromising love, kindness and compassion. Immediately I would feel absolved of all my sins, mistakes and errors. The shame and guilt I thought were mine to bear for eternity evaporate into the light. I would be free. In this Heaven, there is no wanting, no needing, no hurt, no fear or

Parent Like a Guru: Hope Is Not Enough to Make Things Happen

For many of us, we spend a lot of energy hoping that things will turn out the way we want, while we aren’t actually directing our intentions, thoughts, and actions into making things happen. Wishing and hoping really aren’t that powerful, until we put some muscle behind them. Think about it for a moment. What do you hope will be the best outcome for your children’s lives over the next week? What are you actually doing in support of ensuring that your hope is fulfilled? Quite often, we would rather live in hope, because, by just hoping, we aren’t vulnerable

Diet Like a Guru: What is the Truth

All of us have within us a wise inner-guru, who is available to us 24-7. Our inner-guru answers every question we ask with absolute truth, because that’s what it is there to do, so we can live in our fullest potentiality – the most expansive life possible. I don’t know about you, but I am not always ready to listen to that truth and to the wisdom that often piggybacks on that truth. And, so, I forget that my inner-guru is there, and I answer my question for myself with the same old relentless patterns that don’t ever work (I

Dilemmas of a Small Business Guru

Yes – You! You are a Small Business Guru. Well, maybe not yet, but you are certainly on the path! Every successful business and every single business guru starts out having one idea that inspires them to do one thing to grow their idea into something more. The idea is a catalyst, which ignites a spark of inspiration – “Maybe I can turn my idea into something valuable -something people would pay money for.” Perhaps inspiration compels them to begin online searches into starting a small business; maybe they share their idea with trustworthy individual; maybe they call a financial

Parent Like a Guru: How Do I Know I’m On the Right Path as a Parent?

Quite often, when a potential client calls me to make an appointment for a coaching session, they ask: “How do I know that this is going to work? How do I know that this is the right thing for me?” The bottom line is that you don’t know, and you won’t know until you begin to engage personally and directly with the practice of consciously evolving yourself as a person and as a parent. What does it require to evolve consciously? Evolving consciously requires a degree of discipline, presence, and mindfulness to your thinking, to the thoughts you think, and

To Deprive Myself is Out of the Question

These blogs are part of a video series I produced earlier this year. From Free Video-Blog series, to E-book and now to Blogs, I wanted to provide as much access as possible to these words of wisdom. Why? Because, I’m all about the fulfillment of the Human-Spirit…Everyone’s Human Spirit! So, here we go! The most frequently used statement of anyone wanting to change their way of being in the world: "I Don’t Want to Deprive Myself!" Okay! #1 Rule of Diet Like a Guru is: You need not deprive yourself of ANYTHING! So, with that said, you are now free

Who’s Running My Business? I Don’t Want to Think About it!

I’m facilitating a workshop this coming August in Brainerd, Minnesota, called Who’s Running My Business. Sounds like fun, right? The intention of this workshop is for you – the participant to recognize that what you think isn’t as important as how you think. Huh? I bet you kind of feel like the guy in this photo! Any business coach, or life coach, worth their weight in salt will focus your coaching sessions on how you make the choices you make – as I like to put it – how you choose to choose what you choose. Again, with the confusion?

Deep Recovery –

We think we are recovering from our addictions to harmful substances and activities, or to habitual mental or emotional practices. Truth is, by surrendering our use of substances and behaviors that harm us, we begin reclaiming ourselves from that which encourages self-abuse, self-neglect, self-loathing, and most importantly, from the denial of Self. Can you imagine that? Deep Recovery empowers us to mindfully give up those practices that entrain us to ignore our inner wisdom and guidance, and have us continually live with stress and despair. To defer to no one, which is the most self-honoring practice of all, requires that

Deep Recovery

Transformation as an Absolute for Addicts and Mental Health Sufferers A paradigm shift is occurring in the field of recovery. Staying clean and sober “ regardless of the addiction, can now be recognized as the initial stage of personal transformation. This is not just hype “ this is an absolute! By shifting our context of recovery from coping with and managing our addictions, to uncovering and healing the deepest source of our addictions, we not only become more self-realized, but we allow self-actualizing to be at the forefront of our intentions. It is clear in Dr. Rosie Kuhn’s eyes that,

Happiness is an Inside Job

My client, Richard, is dying of lung cancer. He has been a wealthy and successful brain surgeon: seems like Richard should be a happy guy too, right? The truth is, for most of Richard’s life, he was an unhappy alcoholic. Now, in his late 60’s, he is retired, sober and has just a few years left to live a happy life. Sitting in the middle of a crowded and noisy coffee shop, Richard asked me: “Rosie, how do I find happiness?” I said: “Close your eyes, Richard, and think a happy thought.” Within 2 seconds, a radiant smile came across

Am I Worthy of My Own Expression?

For the past few weeks I’ve been struggling with more angst, worry and sadness than usual. I rarely go to menopause as the reason for these shifts in my emotional state. Though hormones can cause emotional shifts, rarely am I affected that way. And my experience is that when I stay intentional about being with myself and my emotions “ just like a mom with her child who isn’t feeling well, the source of the emotions becomes clear. A few nights ago I had a series of dreams that were very deep and profound. Usually I don’t remember my dreams,

Before You Take That First Step Towards Parenting Like a Guru

Stepping onto the spiritual path called parenting requires that you clarify, for yourself, not only what is compelling enough to step on the path, but what is compelling enough to keep you walking on that path. People are often inspired to take that first step because it sounds exciting, feels exhilarating, and worthy of the commitment. Few follow through with the second, third, or fourth step. Why? Because it gets scary when we begin to stretch beyond our comfort zone. We begin to feel the discomfort of the reorientation that is naturally occurring as part of growing and shifting our

To Parent Like a Guru – Let Go of Everything You Think You Know About Everything

To parent like a guru – we inevitably learn to let go of everything we think we know about parenting. To parent like a guru, let go of how you perceive yourself as a parent or grandparent. Let go of the stresses and the worries, plus the hoped-for outcomes of all the blood, sweat & tears you have brought to this role as parent or grandparent thus far. Let go of doing it right, being perfect, never failing your children, or feeling like a failure yourself. Parenting like a guru requires letting go of all of that, and more. Parenting,

Declaring Your Place in the World: Check These Off Your To-Do List

Young, Daring and Unstoppable! In the late 60’s, the summer of my Junior year of high school, my sweetheart, Paul, and I took on a project of creating awareness in our small Island community in Michigan, of the importance of environmental support. Using an electric typewriter and the manual cranking mimeograph machine at the local library, we made over 1,000 pamphlets, listing the many ways to help the Islanders become aware of how we could save the planet: recycle, reuse, population control, small volume toilets, etc. I rode my bike around the Island carefully placing our answers to world devastation

Growing is Hard Work

I’m angry. Sometimes, like now, I hate my life “ not the part where I’m traveling and working internationally; not the part where I’m living on a secluded island that’s considered one of the most beautiful places on Earth; and, not when I’m working with clients that are empowering themselves to live in their brilliant creativeness. I’m angry and hate my life when I can’t have what I want when I want it. Being on a spiritual path, it’s inevitable that I would come to the realization that I am not in charge “ never was and never will be.
