Parent Like a Guru: Hope Is Not Enough to Make Things Happen

For many of us, we spend a lot of energy hoping that things will turn out the way we want, while we aren’t actually directing our intentions, thoughts, and actions into making things happen. Wishing and hoping really aren’t that powerful, until we put some muscle behind them.

Think about it for a moment. What do you hope will be the best outcome for your children’s lives over the next week? What are you actually doing in support of ensuring that your hope is fulfilled?

1-Parent-Like-a-Guru-CoverQuite often, we would rather live in hope, because, by just hoping, we aren’t vulnerable to failing. If we don’t make attempts, there is no risk of failing. However without walking your talk – intentionally aligning your actions with your intentions – your hopes, well, they most likely will never materialize the way you hope they will.

To parent like a guru requires that you consider again, and again, and again, what you are willing to live for, and die for, to risk vulnerability for, and to risk failure for.

Parenting inevitably requires each of us to humbly admit that we are only human, after all. You will face failure, more often than you care to, I’m sure of it. But, by acting in alignment with your hopes and your intentions, you incrementally cultivate awareness of your true capacity to fulfill your hopes and desires, for yourself and your children. You build resilience, and inevitably you are unstoppable in the face of potential defeat.

Just for today, ask yourself this question: “What and who is important enough to me, that just for today, I’ll bring mindful attention to my actions and how they serve my highest values, my highest truths, and greatest desires?” Just this one practice will take you a long way on your path to parent like a guru.
